Simeon and Anna

When Jesus was 40 days old Mary and Joseph traveled to the temple in Jerusalem for another ceremony. Many, many years before Jesus came to earth as a baby, God had given Moses laws for His people to obey. One of those laws was that any family who had a firstborn son had to take that son and have him dedicated at the temple. To dedicate someone means to offer him to God. The parents of the firstborn son had to take an offering with them as they dedicated their son to God in the temple. The offering needed to be a lamb. If a family didn’t have enough money to bring a lamb, God allowed them to bring 2 birds called turtledoves.

Mary and Joseph loved and obeyed God.

Let’s listen to what happened in those days, as Mary and Joseph continue to do what is expected.

Thank You God for sending Jesus to be the Savior of the world. Help us to be as

obedient as Joseph and Mary and do what You command us to in our lives.

Jesus is born!

Luke 2:1-20

Psalm 72:11 – “And let all kings bow down before Him, all nations serve Him”.

Lesson Goals

Know that Christmas is Jesus’ birthday! See that God had a special plan Understand how much God loved us--He sent His Son.

A Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

For the past few Sundays, we have been talking about Mary and Joseph. An angel told both of them the good news about Jesus’ birth. Today we will celebrate Jesus’ birthday! The ruler of the kingdom made a law that everyone must be counted. Each person had to go to his home town to be counted. So, Joseph and Mary packed up and traveled to a small town called Bethlehem, because that was the hometown of Joseph. It was a very long and tiring trip because Mary was pregnant. When they arrived in Bethlehem, there were no more motel rooms available, so they stayed in a stable with the animals. That night, Mary gave birth to Jesus. She wrapped Him in cloth and put Him in the feed box where the animals ate their food. At that time there were shepherds out in the fields with the sheep. An angel of the Lord appeared to them and they were terrified. The angel told them not to be afraid and explained the great news about Jesus’ birth. They were very joyful and excited about Jesus’ birth.

Suddenly a large group of angels appeared and sang songs to God for His gift of Jesus. They were so excited and happy about Jesus. They sang with such joy in their hearts.

The shepherds were so amazed that they went to see Jesus. They found Him just as the angels said. What a wonderful day! They spread the joyful news to others about Jesus’ birth.

After that, the shepherds went back to their sheep. They praised God for all the things they had heard and seen.

God did a special miracle that day. He sent His only son Jesus into the world because He loved us. God gave us the best gift ever...the gift of Jesus. He is the only way we can be with God in Heaven. Jesus is our ladder or bridge to help us go to Heaven one day. We must trust Jesus and believe in Him. Would you like to trust Jesus today?

Do you have joy in your heart like the angels and shepherds? They were excited because they knew that God had sent His Son into our world. Let’s be joyful today as we celebrate Jesus’ birth.

Joseph Has a Dream

Psalm 72:11 – “And let all kings bow down before him, all nations serve him.”

Lesson Goals: See that God had a special plan Understand how much God loved us--He sent his Son See how important it is to obey God even in hard times

Matthew 1:18-24.

Last week we discovered that Mary was going to have God’s Son. An angel from God came and told her the good news. Mary quickly told her fiancée, Joseph, the news. Joseph didn’t know what to think. He decided to divorce her quietly so that she would not be embarrassed.

But after he had thought about it, something happened! An angel appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.”

All of this happened just like God told His people many years ago. God kept His promise—He sent His Son. Another name for Jesus was Immanuel because it means “God is with us.”

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. Joseph obeyed God and so did Mary. They didn’t worry about what people thought. Instead, they did what God said—and a beautiful miracle happened—it changed the world!

God did a miracle. He sent His Son to live with us! Jesus understands all the things we deal with. See how much He loves us! Lots of people may do nice things for us—but Jesus died for us—nobody else would do that! We have a choice to believe in Jesus and trust Him with our lives. It’s your decision. God gave us the best gift of all at Christmas—Jesus. What gift will you give Him?

THE ANGEL GABRIEL APPEARS TO MARY

Psalm 72:11 – “And let all kings bow down before him, all nations serve him.”

Lesson Goals

Understand that Mary is Jesus’ mother Remember that Christmas is Jesus’ birthday Know that Jesus is the only way to Heaven.

Luke 1:26-38

One day, in a town named Nazareth, God sent an angel to a young girl. The angel’s name was Gabriel. The girl’s name was Mary. The Bible tells us that Mary was a young girl who was engaged. She was engaged to a man named Joseph. Joseph was a carpenter in town and Mary had been promised to him. She was waiting to marry him.

Can you imagine an angel coming to visit you? Have you ever seen an angel? Mary had never seen an angel, either. The angel knew that and greeted Mary, “God is with you and has given you special favor. Don’t be afraid.” The angel also told Mary that she would become pregnant. She was going to have a son. The angel even told her to name her son Jesus. The angel Gabriel explained that Jesus would be great. He would be called the Son of the Most High God. God would even make Him a king like David and He would rule forever.

Mary was confused. Remember, she was promised to be married but she wasn’t married yet. “How can this happen?” she asked.

So the angel explained, “The Holy Spirit is going to come to you. God’s power will cover you like a cloud and Jesus, will be born to you. He will be called the Son of God. Nothing is impossible with God!”

Mary believed. Mary accepted the task that God had chosen for her.

“Let everything happen just as you have said,” Mary told the angel. Then the angel, Gabriel left.

God kept His promise. Mary is going to have a baby! Pray: Thank you God, for keeping your promises.

APPLICATION

Mary believed. Mary accepted the task that God had chosen for her. “Let everything happen just as you have said,” Mary told the angel. Then the angel, Gabriel left.

God’s promise of sending Jesus means wonderful things for us. God loved you so much that He sent His one and only Son. Whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. Isn’t that good news. Jesus was born so that we could be with God for ever and ever

Jesus Foretold

Bible Verse: Psalm 72:11 – “And let all kings bow down before Him, all nations serve Him.”

Long ago God promised to send His Son to earth. Do you think God kept His promise? How do you think He did it? In the next few week’s we will study how God kept His promise!

Jesus cured a woman of an issue of blood (Luke 8:43-48).

And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. 45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” 47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

Song on our God of Miracles

There are so many more lessons of how God used Jesus to bring healing in many different situations both then and now. We have been studying about His mighty power and how we need to have faith and believe He can work in our lives as well. Join us next week as we begin to study the birth of the Jesus that performed all these miracles.

Miracles of Jesus - Jesus opened the eyes of two blind men

Scripture Reading

Jesus opened the eyes of two blind men (Matthew 20:30-34).

Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want Me to do for you?” He asked. “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.” Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed Him.

All Children:

Song:

Review:

1.  Why were two men shouting for Jesus? (They wanted Him to heal their blind eyes so they could see.)

2. What did the two men do when the crowd told them to be quiet? (They shouted even louder.)

3. Why did Jesus ask the men what they wanted even though He already knew their need? (He likes for people to ask Him for what they need.)

Application

Once again Jesus teaches that if we have faith He will answer. Let’s share this with our unsaved loved ones, friends, neighbors anyone the Lord puts in our life.

Miracles of Jesus - Jesus raises the widows son from the dead

(Bible lesson if you prefer to read to the children.)

Jesus raised the widow's son from the dead (Luke 7:11-18).

Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and His disciples and a large crowd went along with Him. As He approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out - the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, His heart went out to her and He said, “Don’t cry.” Then He went up and touched the bier they were carrying Him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help His people.” This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country. John’s disciples told him about all these things.

• What ways have others shown compassion for you?

• How does Jesus show compassion for you?

• How can you show compassion toward others?

Luke 7:16 - “All the people were amazed. They began praising God. They said, “A great prophet has come to us! God is taking care of His people.”

What Can You Do: Ask the children what kinds of things God can use them to do. For example, God can use them to tell others about God, invite others to church, or help a friend who is discouraged or sick to feel better. When they are older, God can use them to be missionaries or pastors or anything else that God needs them to be. Challenge your child to pray that God would use them every day.

MIRACLES OF JESUS

“Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

Psalm 37:4

(Matthew 8:5-13).      (IF YOU PREFER READING IT.)

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have You come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”  When Jesus heard this, He was amazed and said to those following Him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.

THE MIRACLES OF JESUS

JESUS CALMS THE STORM

In this lesson, the children will see how Jesus has authority over all things. Nothing is impossible with Him.
TOPICS Courage, Faith, Jesus, Miracles, Power of God, Protection, Wonder
Sometimes we cannot see God’s calm hand protecting us in the storm until it is over and the dust settles. Many times, the outcome may be different from what we think it should be.

With that in mind, how do we ask the Lord to intercede for us when we face turbulent times?

1. We should follow the disciples' example and call out to the Lord. However, it may be better to call out before our boats begin to sink.
2. We must have faith that the Lord cares for us and know that nothing is too hard or impossible for Him.
3. We must realize that the Lord's plans are perfect.
4. We should remember that God knows the beginning from the end. We may never see the the big picture, but we need to trust that God works for the good of those who love Him. (See Romans 8:28.)
5. We can take comfort in knowing that the Lord keeps His promises.

MEMORY WORK

"You rule the mighty sea.” Psalm 89:9

SCRIPTURE READING

Introduction:Today’s lesson will show the authority that Jesus had over the earth. As we read the story, remember what Jesus said in Matthew 28:18, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” As we begin reading, Jesus had just finished speaking to the multitudes.

Read Mark 4:35-41 (Jesus Calms the Storm)

Discussion Questions:
1. Where was Jesus during the storm? (In the stern, or back, of the boat, asleep.)
2. Why do you think Jesus was asleep? (He was probably tired from preaching to the crowd.)
3. How was Jesus able to calm the storm, miraculously? (He commanded it to be still, as He has all authority over heaven and earth. See Matthew 28:18.)
4. Why do you think the disciples were so afraid and had no faith? (Answers may vary. They were focused on the storm. The disciples may have attempted to remove the water themselves. They did not turn to Jesus until the boat began to sink.)
5. How should we handle the storms in our lives? (Allow children to share their answers.)

APPLICATION

In today's lesson, we've learned once again, that nothing is impossible for Jesus. Everything is under His control. All of us will face storms in our lives, but take heart and have faith, because Jesus is able to calm the turbulent times of our lives just as He calmed the storm for the disciples. When we call out to the Lord, in faith, we will see miracles in our lives as well.

We see the healing power of faith and obedience. We also learned that it is very important to praise God, which helps us realize that all blessings come from Him. We should exalt God and give Him thanks on a regular basis.

THE MIRACLES OF JESUS

THE POOL AT BETHESDA

This lesson teaches children that Jesus’ words have the power to heal.

TOPICS Believing, Healing, Miracles, Power of God

MEMORY WORK

The blind can see. The crippled can walk. People with harmful skin diseases are healed.

The deaf can hear. The dead are raised to life. And the Good News is told to the poor. Matthew 11:5

SCRIPTURE READING ( If you would like scriptures for today’s lesson.)

Introduction:While the word “pool” refers to a place for having fun in the summer, it had a slightly different meaning and use during Jesus’ day. Pools were gathering places for people who had various illnesses or injuries because their ailments could often be helped or cured by entering a pool. In today’s lesson, Jesus performs a miracle in Jerusalem at a special pool called Bethesda.

Read John 5:1-15 (Jesus heals a disabled man.)

Discussion Questions:
1. Why were disabled people at the pool? (Because every day one person could enter the pool and be healed.)
2. How long had the man Jesus met been disabled? (Thirty-eight years.)
3. Why hadn’t the man been healed? (Because someone always beat him to the pool.)
4. What did Jesus tell the man? (To get up, pick up his mat, and walk.)
5. Did the man have to enter the pool? (No.)
6. What does this event teach us about Jesus’ power? (That His actions didn’t require the help of the healing pool and His words were powerful enough to heal the man.)
Conclusion: A man who had been disabled for thirty-eight years was healed by Jesus! This event teaches us that the Lord cares for us and has the power to perform miracles. The Jewish leaders were too focused on other things and missed out on what Jesus had done. So, we should be like the healed man and tell others about Jesus’ healing power!
Application: Jesus’ command to the disabled man at the Pool of Bethesda had the power to heal. We can trust that He also has the power to heal and help us!

JAIRUS’S  DAUGHTER

This lesson teaches children that Jesus’ words have the power to heal.
TOPICS. Believing, Healing, Miracles, Power of God

SCRIPTURE

"We have told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. What we told you were not just smart stories that someone invented. But we saw the greatness of Jesus with our own eyes." 2 Peter 1:16

Introduction:Jesus almost always had a crowd following Him because people knew He was a teacher and a healer. Today’s lesson is about a father who sought after Jesus to help his sick daughter even though all hope seemed lost. Yet Jesus showed the father that nothing is beyond His power!

Read Luke 8:40-42, 49-56 (Jesus brings a girl back to life.)( If you prefer the Bible Study from the Bible)
Discussion Questions:
1. Who was Jairus? (A father and one of the synagogue leaders.)
2. What did Jairus do on behalf of his daughter? (Fell at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to heal his daughter.)
3. What was wrong with Jairus’ daughter? (She was dying.)
4. What did the messenger tell Jairus? (That his daughter had died and he shouldn’t bother Jesus anymore.)
5. What was Jesus’ response? (“Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”)
6. Who went into the house with Jesus? (Peter, John, James, and the girl’s parents.)
7. How did the mourners respond to Jesus’ statement? (They laughed.)
8. What happened when Jesus took the girl by the hand and told her to get up? (Her spirit returned and she immediately stood up!)
9. Why did Jesus order them not to tell anyone what happened? (Because people would then selfishly seek Him out instead of humbly approach Him as Jairus did.)

Conclusion: Jesus’ has power over death! By bringing Jairus’ daughter back to life, Jesus once again proved that He was God in the flesh. Jesus’ intimate dealings with individuals in the Bible teaches us that He wants a personal relationship with us as well!

APPLICATION

Help the children understand that no illness (or even death) is beyond the Lord’s healing power!

LESSON 4: JESUS CALMS THE STORM

TOPICS: Courage, Faith, Jesus, Miracles, Power of God, Protection, Wonder

We pray the children will learn to ask the Lord to hear their prayers when they are  facing difficult times.
Sometimes we cannot see God’s calm hand protecting us in the storm until it is over and the dust settles. Many times, the outcome may be different from what we think it should be.
With that in mind, how do we ask the Lord to pray for us when we face difficult times?

  1. Call out to the Lord. It may be better to call out before our boats begin to sink.

  2. We must have faith that the Lord cares for us and know that nothing is too hard or impossible for Him.

  3. Know that He is perfect.

  4. Nothing is impossible for God.

  5. We can take comfort in knowing that the Lord keeps His promises.

LESSON 2 JESUS HEALS A BLINDMAN

MEMORY WORK

"We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10

  1. Whose handiwork are we? (God's)

  2. For what, were we created? (To do good works)

  3. With whose help can we accomplish these tasks? (God has prepared our work for us in advance)

Today’s lesson will show us that Jesus’ heart is for the wounded. Jesus explains in simple terms that just because someone is disabled doesn’t mean it is a result of sin. Jesus gives a good reason why people might be born disabled in our story today.

John 9:1-12 (Jesus Heals the Blind Man)

Discussion Questions:

  1. Was the blind man always blind? (Yes, since birth)

  2. How did Jesus heal the blind man? (Jesus healed the man by anointing the man’s eyes with mud. Jesus then told him to wash in the pool of Siloam)

  3. Do you think it still took faith for this man to be healed? (Yes, he had to believe that Jesus could heal him)

  4. How did Jesus and the blind man display the works of God and bring glory to the Father? (Jesus performed a miracle, showing us God’s healing power. The blind man gave God glory by telling others what the Lord had done for him)

Preschool:

Intermediate:

APPLICATION: In today's lesson, we have learned that hard times or unfortunate things might happen to us or people we love, but to remember that hardship is not necessarily because of sin in our lives. Sometimes, unfortunately things happen to others or us so that we can show the works of God. When this happens, it glorifies God.

And on your feet wear the Good News of peace to help you stand strong. And also use the shield of faith. With that you can stop all the burning arrows of the Evil One. SWORD OF THE SPIRIT

The Sword of the Spirit: The Roman sword was short and lightweight so they could use it easily. At close range, it was a deadly weapon. The Sword of the Spirit represents the Word of God.

Have you ever heard anyone call the Bible a sword? That may strange because a sword is sharp and used for battle. Well, the Bible is sharp also. And the Bible is used for spiritual battle. The Word of God contains the truth, and the truth can be sharper than any two edged sword. When people hear the truth, they must make a decision, follow the truth, or fight against it. And fighting against the truth can be quite difficult. In the end, it is a losing battle. The Word of God is a powerful weapon, especially when used under the power and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

And on your chest wear the protection of right living. And on your feet wear the Good News of peace to help you stand strong.  And also use the shield of faith. With that you can stop all the burning arrows of the Evil One. Accept God’s salvation to be your helmet. And take the sword of the Spirit—that sword is the teaching of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times(International Children’s Bible) Ephesians 6:13-17

The Belt of Truth helps us stand firm so that we don’t trip over Satan’s lies.

The Breastplate of Righteousness protects our heart because knowing we are right with God through Jesus makes us confident to stand firm and keeps us from falling in to sin.

Shoes prepared with the Gospel of Peace – God’s peace helps us stand firm even during the storms of life and moves us to share His peace with others!

The Shield of Faith: The shield protected the Roman soldier from arrows and sword blows. Our spiritual enemies are constantly throwing arrows and thrusting swords towards us. The best way to deflect these blows is with the shield of faith. When we hold on to our shield, when we hold firm to our faith in Jesus, we can go forth boldly.

What is faith? Hebrews 11:1 – “Faith means being sure of the things we hope for. And faith means knowing that something is real even if we do not see it.  Faith believes God & acts on it. The result is fully trusting & obeying God.

ARMOR OF GOD : SHOES OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE

Feet with the Gospel of Peace: To do battle, a soldier must be prepared to go, and have good strong sandals which were absolutely necessary. Before we can do battle, we must be prepared, but our preparation comes from the Gospel the good news of Jesus, through it we can tell others how they can have peace with God.

How do we prepare?

The sandals of the Roman soldier "often were fitted with nails, or armed with spikes, to make the hold firm in the ground" (Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible).

GIVE US A FIRM FOUNDATION

We need to know God's good news (HIS WORD)

Our purpose, and our mission.

Truly know that the good news is promised by God.

Take comfort in the good news promised by God, that there is nothing that can trouble our hearts or give us reason to be afraid.

Christ has overcome the world (John 16:33), and so we have nothing to fear from it.

BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

The Breastplate of Righteousness: The Roman soldiers wore a protective covering to cover the vital organs, like the heart, the lungs, liver, etc. If any of these were injured, the life of the soldier would be in a serious situation. If we try to do battle over Satan's enemies with only our own righteousness, we will never win. We need a righteousness that comes from our Savior.

Memory Verse Scripture:  So stand strong, with the belt of truth tied around your waist. Lesson 1

July 19

Hi Children!  Here is us our next series!  “The Armor of God”

Our lives would be much better if we would wake up each morning and put on the, “The Whole Armor of God,” God has given us. He has provided it so that we can use it to protect ourselves from the schemes of the devil.

Enjoy the lesson and song on the armor of God! I pray that the children will learn each element of the armor! Become strong, knowledgeable in the Lord, be confident, and know how to defeat the enemy.

Armor of God

Belt of Truth – Every Word of God (Proverbs 30:5)

Breastplate of Righteousness – Turn Away (Psalm 34:14-15)

Shoes of the Gospel – Go Therefore (Matthew 28:19)

Shield of Faith – Faith (Hebrews 11:1)

Helmet of Salvation – He Made Him to Be Sin (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Sword of the Spirit – All Scripture is Breathed Out by God (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Craft Make Belts of Truth with the students. Pass out two sheets of construction paper (or the belt pieces, for younger kids,) scissors and crayons. Google  for a roman style belt and explain this is what would have been worn by this kind of soldier. So that’s the kind of belt you will be making.

(If you don’t have all these materials, just use whatever works)

  1. Start by folding each piece of construction paper in half, long side to long side. (Hot dog style.) Unfold and cut along the crease. You now have four long pieces.

  2. Cut one short side of each piece into a point. Do this by cutting away each corner and having your cuts meet in the middle. (Refer to the picture, that will make more sense.)

  3. Along the other end, the flat side, punch two holes a couple of inches apart. (For younger kids, do these steps first, so they can just focus on the important parts, thinking about the Truth.

  4. Now write a Biblical truth that matters to you on each piece. Add a picture if desired. (For example, “God loves me no matter what.” Draw a heart.)

  5. String all four pieces onto a long length of yarn. Cut the yarn and tie the belt around your waist. You now have a Belt of Truth!
